Ryūkai Mandala 兩界曼荼羅

This sacred pair of thangkas represents the Mandala of the Two Realms (Ryūkai Mandala) — a core teaching in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism (Shingon) introduced by Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) in the 9th century. The set consists of:

1. Womb World Mandala (Garbhadhātu) — expressing compassion and manifestation

2. Diamond World Mandala (Vajradhātu) — embodying wisdom and indestructible truth

Painstakingly painted over two years using 24K gold and natural vegetable ink, this thangka set reflects extraordinary devotion and technical mastery. The intricate forms, celestial hierarchies, and symbolic geometry are not only meditative tools, but sacred blueprints of the enlightened universe.

• Activity and Principle

This unity of opposites is core to esoteric Buddhist practice — and by meditating on both mandalas, the practitioner aligns with the full spectrum of Buddha-nature.
